Spanish Sonatas, a Description

The term sonata has been used to describe different genres of composition over the centuries. The sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti, for example, bear no structural relationship to the classical sonata. Scarlattis 555 keyboard sonatas were one movement works written binary form. The title sonata in the classical period was given to works of three or four movements for one or two instruments. The early 20th century Spanish composers followed the trend in art music of the time that made many attempts to revive and renew sonata form. The four sonatas for solo guitar by José, Rodrigo and Turina belong to this revival.
