CHECKING FOR NAMES.

1875 KANSAS CENSUS, CRESWELL TOWNSHIP, COWLEY COUNTY, MARCH 1, 1875.

LOOMIS

I. C. Loomis, age 72, Place of Birth Connecticut, Where from: Tennessee.

N. K. Loomis, female, age 60, Place of Birth Pennsylvania, Where from: Tennessee.

NEXT ENTRY:

A. J. Cochran, age 49, female, Place of Birth Pennsylvania, Where from: Tennessee.

[Kay was led up the garden path, and so were you I think! Cochran he referred to came TOO LATE to apply to A. J. Cochran ABOVE. Census shows she was born in Pennsylvania (like Harriet or N. K.) and  came from Tennessee [as well as Isaac Chester Loomis and N. K. (who I believe is Harriet R. Loomis].

1893

Cochran

Taken from Cowley County, Kansas, Early Day Residents 21 & Over (2 Volumes) and I am sorry to say I do not place much trust in them.

Arkansas City 1893: Cochran, R. C., age 33, male.

On right hand side, where females are shown appear Cochran, Lorina (age 45); Cochran, Nancy (age 50), and Cochran, Maggie (age 26).

On same line [which usually indicates party on the right is spouse...

Cochran, R. C., 33                               Cochran, Maggie, 26

In 1875: A. J. Cochran, female, was 49.

In 1893: A. J. Cochran, female, would have been 67. Correct?

Speculation: Was N. K. [and this could possibly be wrong!] or Harriet R. [which I suspect might be right!] married to someone by the name of Cochran in Tennessee. Then it follows that N. K. [or Harriet] might have been married to Cochran and had a daughter by the name of A. J. Cochran, aged 49, in 1875 Census. It is really a stretch: from “N. K.” to “H. R.” However, the Census Takers in 1875, particularly in places like Creswell Township (later part of Arkansas City) were not very WHIPPY. That is the main reason Norton lost out and Manning won! People in southern and southeastern part of Cowley County were durned near illiterate. That is why Winfield has the Courthouse and Arkansas City does not.

NOW: IF WE SUBSTITUTE HARRIET R. FOR N. K. ----

1893: Isaac Chester [I. C.] Loomis, if he should have lived that long, would have been 90.

1893: Harriet R. [or N. K.] Loomis, his wife, would have been 78.

From tombstone you learned, if I understand this correctly, that I. C. Loomis died 1882 and was buried next to his wife, Nancy L. Cochran. THIS IS WHERE I STAND! UTTERLY CONFUSED! TO ME IT APPEARS THAT HARRIET R. LOOMIS WAS THE WIFE OF ISAAC CHESTER INASMUCH AS THEY BOTH SIGNED A LEGAL INSTRUMENT IN 1873 WHEREIN SHE WAS NAMED AS HIS WIFE.

Later in 1875 Census...

James A. Loomis, age 41, Place of Birth Pennsylvania, Where from: Illinois.

E. T. Loomis, female, age 37, Place of Birth New Hampshire, Where from: Illinois.

[We now know that is wrong: Should be Elvira S. Eaton Loomis. Right?

Appears that James A. Loomis was married to E. S. Loomis.]

MYSTERY:

RIGHT AFTER THE JAMES A. & E. T. LOOMIS ENTRIES...

Sarah Collins, age 23, Place of Birth Pennsylvania, Where from: Illinois.

So here I go again! Was Elvira S. Eaton Loomis married before she married James A. Loomis to a man with the last name of COLLINS?

COWLEY COUNTY, KANSAS, EARLY DAY RESIDENTS 21 & OVER (2 VOLUMES)

LOOMIS

Harriet Loomis, female, age 75, Arkansas City 1893.

J. A. Loomis, male, age 59, Arkansas City 1893.

E. S. Loomis, female, age 50, [his wife], Arkansas City 1893.

MYSTERY:

Who was Harriet Loomis? Was she the wife of I. C. Loomis?

I suspect she was and that she was the mother of James A. Loomis and Col. McMullen’s wife.

STALLARD BOOK.....

Excerpts from information prepared for James L. Tuttle, Geuda Springs, Kansas, by Stafford Abstract Company, Winfield, Kansas, in 1916. [NOTE: I DO TRUST ABSTRACT COMPANY!]

LOOMIS.

1872.

The land was mortgaged in 1872 for $240.00. I. C. Loomis held the mortgage which was released March 13, 1873. I. C. Loomis and Harriet R. Loomis, his wife, assigned to Samuel Hoyt, attorney at law, their power of attorney.

CONCLUSION BY MAW:

I. C. LOOMIS IS CORRECT! J. C. LOOMIS IS INCORRECT.

Col. McMullen, Kinne, Loomis, find Judge McIntire at Salt Springs At Work.

Winfield Courier, July 10, 1874. [From Traveler.]

Judge Peffer, Col. J. C. McMullen, E. P. Kinne, Mr. Loomis, and several ladies, also the “Special Contributor,” visited the salt works on the 6th. We found Judge McIntire superin-tendent of the works. Our July sun is doing the handsome thing for these just now, giving a product of a ton per week.

There are also springs containing, apparently, glauber’s salts and other minerals in solution. We concluded the “warm spring” to be caused by the action of the solar heat.

[According to Kathy Janisse records, James A. Loomis came to Arkansas City in 1874. Above entry could pertain to either James A. Loomis or I. C. Loomis. MAW]

LOOMIS

Wife: E. S. Loomis, Arkansas City 1893, age 50

Loomis, Harriet, Arkansas City 1893, age 75

[Could Harriet Loomis be Wife of I. C. Loomis?] I think she was!

Next Question: Did I. C. Loomis build the LOOMIS HOTEL?

I really think he did. He would have been capable of doing this when he was younger.

AS YOU CAN READILY SEE, OUR BIGGEST PROBLEM IS THE FACT THAT EARLY RECORDS ON COWLEY COUNTY ARE ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND.

OH HOW I HOPE THAT THE ARKANSAS VALLEY DEMOCRAT CAN SHED SOME LIGHT ON THE EARLY YEARS.

SUSPECT STALLARD WAS ALSO UP THE GARDEN PATH IN THINKING THAT J. C. LOOMIS WAS THE PROPER PERSON INSTEAD OF I. C. LOOMIS. Hopefully, in time maybe someone else can answer the question: Who built the Loomis Hotel?

Which brings me to you, Ron McIntire. Can you help Kathy and I out on this LOOMIS problem.

See next page for McIntire at Geuda Springs.
