Henry E. Kibbe was born at Windsor Locks,
Connecticut, on July 31, 1861. When he was a small child his parents moved to
Northampton, Massachusetts.
Mr. Kibbe moved to Kansas in 1884. He
passed thru Winfield on his way to a job with the J. D. Shaw lumber company in
Harper. He stayed at Harper a short time before moving to Elk Falls to accept
another job.
He came to Winfield in 1886 to accept a
job with the First National Bank. On October 12, 1886, he married Miss Leoti
Gary and established a home at 1003 east Ninth street. In the fall of 1895 he
went to work for the Bank of Douglass and remained there till March 1904. He
then accepted a position with the Winfield National Bank and came back to
Winfield. H. E. Kibbe and James Lorton bought controlling interest in the
Winfield National Bank in 1912. Kibbe remained with the bank until he retired
in 1945.
Mrs. Kibbe died February 26, 1926. They
had no children. Mrs. Kibbe had one sister, Mrs. J. W. Olds, and one brother,
George C. Gary. In memory of his wife Mr. Kibbe presented Southwestern College
with a memorial organ.
Kibbe and Lorton sold their interest in the Winfield National Bank to
the Mullendore brothers in August 1945. In September the Mullendore’s sold
their interest to the First National Bank of Winfield.
Henry E. Kibbe died February 28, 1947.
Mr. Kibbe was a lifelong member and for years a trustee of the Methodist
Church. He was a member of the Masonic lodge for over 50 years. He also served
as a trustee of Southwestern College for many years.
