Convention called to order by A. N. Deming, Chairman of Central Committee. Committee on organization was appointed and reported Judge McIntire as chairman and W. M. Allison as secre­tary. Committee on resolutions was appointed: Judge R. B. Saffold; C. P. Spaulding, H. H. Constant. Short speeches made by A. N. Deming, A. Walton, Mr. Chase, and others.

Results of informal ballot for District Clerk: J. E. Dunn received 19, Mr. Boutwell 10, Kerns 2. A formal ballot was then taken, which gave 22 for Dunn and 13 for Boutwell. On motion of Mr. Boutwell, J. E. Dunn was nominated by acclamation.

                     VERNON TOWNSHIP, COWLEY CO., KAN., Dec. 1st, 1874.

In pursuance of a previous call, quite a number of the citizens of this township met and organized by electing D. M. Hopkins, as chairman, and T. B. Myers, secretary.

The object of the meeting being stated, which was to provide means for the relief of the needy poor in said township for the present winter.

It was thereupon moved that there be a committee of five appointed to act in concert, or cooperate with the county commit­tee, and amended “to act as the best interests of Vernon Township may indicate,” which was accepted and the motion passed.

A. S. Williams as chairman, Wm. Carter, Hon. Wm. Martin, J. E. Dunn, and D. M. Hopkins, were elected as committee.

It was then moved that “This committee be empowered to call a meeting of the township at any time they may deem advisable.”

The grasshoppers have been playing sad havoc with some of the wheat fields on the Arkansas. Mr. Dunn, of Vernon Township, has a field of twenty-two acres completely eaten up. He thinks, however, that as the cool weather has set in, the wheat will grow up again. Some of the “cusses” are making a miserable attempt to lay eggs, but the frost wakes them up as they start down in their holes.

                                                OLD SETTLERS’ REUNION.

                                      At Riverside Park, Thursday, May 31, 1883.

The Old Settlers’ Association of Vernon Township was called to order by the President, J. W. Millspaugh. Minutes of the last meeting read by the Secretary, H. H. Martin, and approved.

On motion of J. H. Werden, the Association of Old Settlers of Vernon Township was dissolved, and an association of the Old Settlers of Cowley County organized.
