The Winfield vikings will play on the home sod while the Southwestern College Moundbuilders will travel. Valley Center comes here for the opener for Coach Joe Vann's athletes while the Builders will be entertained by the Wildcats of Baker University at Baldwin.
The Vikings held a snappy practice under the lights earlier in the week. Today the work was light in the Vike camp. Coach Vann expects Valley Center to trhow a scrappy team on the field here Friday night and has been endeavoring to prepare for the onslaught.
It will be the first game of the season for both teams.
The Builders will be under somewhat of a handicap at Baldwin Friday night when they collide with the Wildcats of Baker University. Baker coaches scouted the purple team here last week while Baker has not played this fall and sonsequently Coach Hower and his staff have only last season's notes on which to base strategy.
Jim Davis, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Davis, 1409 Main, is a senior and plays fullback. He weighs 179 pounds and measures 5 feet 11 inches.
David Norris counted the first Winfield TD on a keeper play from the 5-yard line. Melburn Brown plunged three yards for the second one and Brown passed to Leon Ahlerich for a 17 yard advance for the final one in the fourth.
Jim Davis plunged over for the first conversion.
THE WINFIELD VIKINGS opened their 1957 football season Sept. 21 in a splash of mud against Valley Center and copped a 19-0 victory. Staunch supporters such as these pretty Vikettes held their place in the grandstands despite the avalanche of water which poured into the stadium at Southwestern. Those not under umbrellas on equipped with raincoats sought shelter where ever it might be, or shivered in their seats. Here, from left, are Judy Harris, Jean Anglemyer and Lucretia Weathers.
WINFIELD'S VIKINGS DRIVE CLOSE TO THE HORNET GOAL in spirited action in the rain at the Valley Center-Winfield high game last night. Vikings who can be identified are Don Jenkins (74), and Phil Hower (73). Hornet players are Ronnie Michner (31), Davey Johnston (46), Kent Courtney (51) and David Applegate (54).
Winfield high school's football Vikings opened their 1957 season at Sonner Stadium last nignt and despite a driving rain showed determination and alertness not seen in Winfield teams for years as they downed Valley Center 19-0.
The Vikes were away ahead of the visitors during practically the entire game. The Winfield defense, though the footing was slippery, held Valley Center to one first down and kept the Hornets from completing a forward pass.
Play was deep in Valley Center territory almost all the time. Only once did the Hornets penetrate Viking terrain and that was in the last period. The drive fizzled with no damage.
Winfield kicked to the visitors to start the game, the ball going into the end zone. Valley started play on its own 20, failed to gain and punted, the kick being hurried and being regained by the Vikings on the Hornet 17.
That was all for the first but in the second the Vikes started another drive. Norris passed 12 yards to Davis for a first down close to the Hornet goal and two plays later Melburn Brown plunged 3 yards for the second touchdown. Davis failed to score the extra point on a plunge and the half ended with Winfield out ahead, 13-0.
In the third period the Vikings kicked off to the Hornets, then recovered a fumble on the Valley Center 20, Akin plunged for 2 the M. Brown gpt away to 12 yards and a first down. Norris ran 8 yards for a touchdown but the play was called back and Winfield penalized 5 yards for offside. The Vikes pushed down again but lost the ball on downs on the 3. The period ended without scoring.
Late in the game, with second and third stringers in the Vike lineup, Valley Center recovered a fumbled punt and gained possession on the Viking 49, the only penetration of Winfield territory during the game. However the Vikes recovered another Hornet fumble and took over just before the final gun.
The Vikings held their oppponents to 29 yards net in rushing and threw up an effective defense against Hornet passes. The visitors failed to complete a pass but tried only two, one of which was intercepted.
The Hornets handled the slippery ball loosley, losing the ball six times on fumbles. The Vikes lost the ball twice on fumbles.
Coach Joe Vann used a great many players in the game, sending in many of his squad.
Rain fell during practically all of the game and cut the crowd to a minimum.
