Will they be able to overcome the plague that harnessed their efforts during the second half of the Wellingron contest last Friday?
Coach Joe Vann and Line Coach Kenny Everhart seem fairly optimistic about it. At least they think they are coming up with some of the answers--that to do something about those end sweeps which helped Wellingtn accumulate 15 first downs here.
Coach Vann figures the Hutchinson strategy will be to run the Vikings ragged around the ends and bombard the air with passes. Hutchinson is victory hungry at present what with two straight losses and the Vikings will have to be merciless.
Anyway Coach Vann says the moving of Phil Hower, standout sophomore fullback, and the possible moving of Don Jenkins, converted center, to defensive ends will help put a stop to the weakness.
He is even going further than that. He will move Robert Barron, a 220 pounder, into the Gerald McGee's guard spot on the defense. To further bolster the defence he expects to put Bull Bottorff, cagey lineman, in as defensive line backer although he will remain in his regular guard position on offense.
Melburn Brown, swivel hipped ball carrier, who has been doing aggressive work in all of his jobs will probably see more line backing action. Cooley is back from light injuries but the absence of David Norris for a temporary sickness may neutralize the return.
Jim Davis, halfback, perhaps the wiser after a week's suspension, will be in for the Hutchinson game considerably aiding the Viking's ground game.
Hutch has been kicked around in its last two, and the Hawks, not use to losing seasons, can even their slate at 2-2 with a win over the Vikes.
Should be close all the way, with Hutch on top by a whisker at the end.
Brown took over the quarterback duties and shared top billing for hero honors with Melburn Brown (no relation) and another sophomore -- Jim Bottorff.
Larry handled the position well and passed for the third Viking counter, a 27-yard play to end Leon Ahlerich.
Melburn scored the first twon tallies, for the victors on a plunge of less than a yard and a 7-yard jaunt around right end.
A week ago when the Winfield crew suffered its first loww at the hands of the Wellington Crusaders their defense wore out, but Friday night, using more alternation, the Vikes held the Salt Hawks well in check.
Bottorff did a fine job containing the Hawks around his end.
The deepest penetration for the Reno County team came with four minutes to go, when they advanced to the 10-yard line, but were held on downs.

Goach Joe Vann's Winfield Vikings won their second Ark Valley League game of the season here Friday night, turning back the Hawks of Hutchinson, 19-0.
The Hawks were turned back from the goal in every period by a Winfield defense that yielded some yards in the midfield area but could not be budged near the goal. Every Hutchinson scoring threat was stymied.
The Winfield defense showed much improvement over a week before when Wellington came from two touchdowns behind in the last half to eke out a victory. So far this season in Valley play the Vikings have defeated Newton and Hutchinson and have bowed to Wellington.
In the only other Valley game last night Ark City worsted Wellington, 13-0.
Jim Davis rushed for a first down in three attempts; Mel Brown picked up 2 yards, then Davis ran for 13 and another first down. Mel brown reeled off 14 yards on a scamper. M. Brown and Akin pushed to near a first down and Jan Cobble, in at quarterback for ailing David Norris, got free for 12 yards and aother first down. Buddy Akin dashed for 9 yards and landed the ball close to the Hawk goal. Jim Davis hit the line and made a first down for Winfield only about a foot form the goal. On the next play Mel Brown pushed across from the 1-foot line for the first fouchdown. the extra point failed and the vikings led, 6-0.
The teams swapped punts, as the second period opened, then Hutchnson made a first down. The teams kept on punting with neither able to gain consistently and the end of the half found the Vikings ahead, 6-0. Neither team threated seriously in the second canto.
Dennis SSperling kicked off to start the second half and Joe Wells gathered the rather short kick in on about the 35. Wells gathered the rather short kick in on about the 35. Wells broke into the clear and sprinted up the west sidelines but was hauled down on the Hawk 17-yard. Winfield then lost the ball on downs, the Hawks taking over on their own 16.
Hutchinson took the ensuing kickoff, and lost a gamble. The Hawks, on fourtth down with short yardage, elected to try for the gain instead of punting. The Winfield line held and the Vikings took over on downs on the Hawk 32.
Cobble dashed 5 yards on a keeper play but a pass to the goal line failed. Larry Brown next tossed a 27-yard touchdown pass to Leon Ahlerich. David Norris came into the game and kicked the extra point to make the score 19-0.
In the fourth period neither team could get a drive under way until well into the quarter Hutchinson got started. He Hawks rushed to a first down on the ground, then Kirk Voth passed to Jackie King for 22 yards and another first down.
Jim Davis intercepted a Hutchinson pass but fumbled the ball back to the Hawks. The Hawks pressed forward and made a first down on the Viking 10-yard. At that point Winfield recovered a fumbnle through the ball would have gone over to the Vikings on downs as they had held the Hawks on their deepest penetration of Viking territory. The Vikes soon punted and the game ended soon afterward, though Hutchinson rushed to two first downs in the waning moments.
The Winfield defense appeared much improved over a week ago. Hutchinson made considerable yardage but was held at critical moments. The Vikes were able to halt sweeping end runs, a weapon used with telling effect last week by Wellington.
Jan Cobble and Larry Brown took over the quarterback chores for David Norris, who had an attack of flu this week. Norris came in to do the punting.

Brown charged over from the one-foot line. Although about every Viking was in on the play only two can be identified - Jan Cobble (64) and Jim Davis (72) who aided heavily in the ground gains. POSSIBLY IN TROUBLE BUT GENERALLY WITH THE ABILITY TO GET OUT OF IT is shifty Melburn Brown (71) above whose swivel hipped drives last night against the Salt Hawks of Hutchinson gave the Vikings a commanding edge on the ground. Bill Bottorff (22) is shown coming in on the right to assist.
