Vikings Knock El Dorado from
Valley Top Perch 20-14

Winfield in 20-14 Triumph

By DALE STEWART

Special Correspondent

El Dorado. -- Winfield knocked El Dorado out of first place in the Ark Valley Friday night, pinning a 20-14 defeat on the Wildcats in a wide open football game.

The Vikings clinched their victory when they intercepted a pass intended for Dave Kuttler inside the 10 yard line with about three minutes left in the game. The interception spiked a Wildcat drive that had moved from the El Dorado 45 to the Winfield 13 in eight plays.

Winfield had taken the lead in the third period when Mel Akin broke thru the left side of the El Dorado line and ran 42 yards to score.

Akin was the Vikings big weapon, as he scored all three touchdowns, getting the other two ona two-yard plunge in the first period and then hauling in a five-yard pass form Jan Cobble in the second period.

The Wildcats, playing without Charley Lively, came up with sterling performances from senior Ralph Unger and sophomore fullback Park Norris.

Unger scored both the El Dorado touchdowns and gained 203 yards in 16 carries, while Norris, in his first varsity game, picked up 58 yards in 13 carries, many of them for short but important gains.

Unger broke away on jaunts of 59 and 82 yards for toughdowns, both times eluding a host of would-be tacklers.

Akin led Winfield in rushing with 87 yards in 12 trips, while sophomore Phil Hower gained 68 in 10 trips.

Akin Scores

The Ark Valley League race tightened up last night as one previously unbeaten tem, El dorado lost to Winfield and another, Arkansas City, played to a 13-13 tie with Hutchinson.

In the other Valley contest Wellington fell before Newton, 7-13, on a late Railer touchdown.

Despite injuries that marked some first string players from the lineup the Winfield Vikings made one of the strongest showings this year to whip El Dorado 20-14 on the El Dorado field last night.

Powerful line smashes and end sweeps by Buddy akin, who scored all three of Winfield's touchdowns, Melburn Brown, Phil Hower and Jan Cobble, racked up a sonsistent ground gain to shred the opposition. Larry Brown was at his best in the aerial department completing three passes for 55 yards to Leon Ahlerich and Buddy Akin, one good for a touchdown.

One More Valley Game

Viking linemen instrumental in squelching the El Dorado offensive attack in the final period were Joe Wells, Leon Ahlerich, and Lewis Wallace, all of whom were key figures in breaking apart the devastating broken field running of El Dorado's Ralph Unger, Don Elder, David Waite, and Park Norris. Contributing to the solid Winfield offensive block once underway were Jim Bottorff, Gerald McGee, don Jenkins, Leonard McNutt and Jack Myers. Brown and Hower were consistent on tackles.

Jubilant coaches Joe Vann and Kenny Everhart left the field with their eyes on Arkansas City, the only remaining ark Valley foe who they will have to beat for the title. The victory gave Winfield a 3-1 won-loss record in Valley play, only one-half game under the Arkansas City record.

The Vikings got into touchdown position on the start, scoring within minutes after the opening gun when Akin plunged the line from the two yard line. Gerald McGee set it up when he blocked an El Dorado punt on the 10 yard line. Norris' kick was good.

Retaliation by El Dorado was immediate. On the El Dorado 41 yard line Unger broke through the Viking defense to dash 59 yards. He kick the point to tie the score.

the Vikings went into a powerful offensive game after that. The backfield moved the ball 39 yards in 10 plays, good for three first down. Brown carried five times for 14 yards, Akin, twice for 14 yards, Hower, twice for nine yards, and Cobble, once for a two yard gain. That put the ball on the El Dorado three yard line but there it stopped.

Makes Long Run

El dorado got its second TD in the second heat with Unger going 83 yards through the whole Winfield team. The kick was good and the enemy had a seven-point edge.

Snapping back immediately the Vikings plunged 80 yards in 10 plays ending when Larry Brown tossed a 13 yard pass to Akin for the second Viking TD. Hower carried four times for 25 yards. Brown carried three time for 13 yards, and Akin carried once for five yards, while Larry Brown completed a seven yard pass to Ahlerich to set the score up. Tthe kick by Norris bounced off the upright and El Dorado still led 14-13.

The Vikings were still on the rampage in the second half and scored the final and winning touchdown when Akin crazy legged the ball 42 yards. Norris kick split the uprights this time to make the score 20-14 for Winfield.

The tally came easily compared to past scores. Brown took the ball on the Winfield 37, found a nice hole and ran 21 yards, then Akin took over on the next play.

El Dorado got desperate in the final period when its gains were limited by the Well, Wallace, Ahlerich, and Hower type tackling. They had the Vikings down on the 11 yard line twice in the final heat but Brown's pass to Ahlerich for 35 yards and a well placed Norris punt put the Vikings out of danger for the game.

ROMPING FOR ONE OF HIS MANY GAINS during the Viking-El Dorado football game at El Dorado last night is Buddy Akin (41), who scored all three of Winfield's touchdowns. Gerald McGee is shown amidst the El Dorado defense. (McCuistion photo)
