Clippings, Winfield - Derby Game '57,

Winfield Daily Courier,

The Vikings will also travel. Coach Jon Vann leads his squad to Derby Friday night for a battle with the Panthers.

Face Unbeaten Team

Derby is undefeated this season and recently chalked up a 20-13 victory over Wellington, a team that later edged Winfield, 13-12. That makes the Vikings underdogs on the Derby field Friday night by a toughdown and an extra point.

Last week in the Hutchinson game David Norris, Viking quarterback and punter, was just recovering from flu and saw no service except to punt and try for extra points. In his absence Jan Cobble took over the quarterback job and did well. Larry Brown, a sophomore, also had a hand in the quarterback position, throwing a touchdown pass to Leon Ahlerich.

The Vikes are in fair physical trim for the contest.

Meet the Vikings:

GARY McNUTT, son of Mr. and Mrs. K. A. McNutt, 1115 E. 7th, is a junior. He weighs 185 pounds, is 5 feet 6 inches tall and plays at guard.

The Wichita Beacon

Prediction

Winfield will attempt to knock Derby out of the ranks of the unbeaten, while pushing its own mark to 4-1.

The Panthers, a strong contender for Chisholm Trail title honors, knocked off Wellington 20-13, while the Vikes dropped a 13-12 decision to the same Crusaders, but Winfield should slip by Derby by a fraction.

WINFIELD 13, DERBY 12

Winfield Daily Courier,

Derby's Panthers Defeat

Winfield Viking Gridders, 33-6

In the only Ark Valley League game played last night El Dorado remained umbeaten in loop play by nosing out Newton, 21-19.

Ark City routed Parsons, 51-0, and Kapaun beat Hutchinson, 18-0, in non-Valley games.

Unbeaten Derby kept its recond clear for the season last night at Derby, rolling over Winfield's Vikings, 33-6.

Derby presented a speedy, aggressive team, one that came from behind to cross the goal line five times. And the Derby defense was adequate when it was needed.

While the Derby team is credited with the victory the Viking defeat came about largely through the fine offensive work of the Panthers' star halfback, Kenny Belisle. The Panther star, who was hard to catch in an open field, scored four of Derby's five touchdowns. The other was made by Larry Bachman.

Vikes Score Early

Winfield started off as if to make a runaway of the game. The Vikes took the opening kickoff and started a drive. Melburn Brown ripped off 5 yards, then Winfield drew a 5-yard penalty for offside. The only Viking penalty of the game. Buddy Akin came right back to reel off 10 yards for a first down.

On third down Mel Brown ran 18 yards for another first down, then picked up 15 for still another. Akin reeled off 8 and the Vikes pressed to a first down on the Derby 5-yard stripe. On the first down Mel Brown went over for the first touchdown of the game. Extra point was missed and Winfield let 6-0.

The lead stood up for the first period but in the waning moments Derby uncorked a drive that saw four consecutive first downs put together. On the first play of the second quarter Kenny Belisle bucked over from the 1-foot line. Extra point was missed and the score was tied, 6-6.

The teams exchanged punts, then Winfield started a drive that carried to the Panther 33, where Winfield lost the ball on downs. Belisle then broke away for a 49-yard dash to the goal for Derby's second touchdown. Larry Bachman rushed over the extra point and Derby led, 13-6. There was no further scoring in the first half.

Makes Long Run

The Panthers roared back in the third period to pile up 139 net yards in rushing and to score two more touchdowns. Derby took the kickoff at the start of the half and went for two first downs. The Belisle again broke away and sprinted 49 yards for the third Derby counter. Bernie Fairchild rushed over the extra point and it was 20-6.

Derby set up its next score by recovering a Viking fumble. The Panthers pushed down and Belisle plunged one foot for the score. Bachman ran over the extra point and it was 27-6.

Late in the third Derby recovered another Vike fumble and started a drive. Early in the fourth Bachman scooted over the goal on a short plunge. Extra point was missed and the score mounted to 33-6.

In the final minutes Winfield started another drive that carried to three straight first downs but the ball was lost when a Panther intercepted a Vike pass. Winfield had one more chance but lost the ball on downs.

It was Homecoming day for the Panthers with crowning of a queen before a big crowd.

The defeat was costly to the Vikings. Tackle Joe Crumpton was injured on the first kickoff and x-rays after the game disclosed a broken ankle. He will be out for the season.

Quarterback David Norris played part of the game with a fractured finger. He may be able to see limited service. Gerald McGee had a badly bruised hand but no broken bones. Jim Davis aggraveted a hip injury and several other Vikings were badly bruised in the gruelling battle.

WINFIELD'S VIKINGS ARE SHOWN ABOVE in the act of scoring against Derby last night. Halfback Mel Brown, obscured by line men, is getting started on a 5-yard dash to cross the goal.

The scoring by periods:

Winfield -------------- 6 0 0 0 -- 6
Derby ----------------- 0 13 13 7 -- 33

Touchdowns,
