Orioles Strike Early To Down Vikes, 20-0

Special to The Beacon:

Winfield.--Augusta's mighty Orioles, repeating as champions of the Chisholm Trail League, took on the second-place Ark Valley winner Winfield here Friday night and whipped the Vikings 20-0 to add another grid star in the already glittering crown of veteran Augusta football coach John Hutter.

The Oriole victory machine swung into operation from the kickoff. Augusta marched 63 relentless yards and halfback Kent Adams toppled over from the one yard out to score.

In the second period, 55 yards were gained in the Augusta cause when Dole passed to Adams. Halfback Lee Miller went over from a yard out and Adams converted to make it 13-0 at halftime.

The Orioles plunged 53 yards to the Viking 15 in the third period before Adams went over to score. Adams again booted the PAT for the 20-0 mark.

The Vikes had a good drive started in the third period before losing the ball on a fumble.

The victory marked August'a eighth straight triumph of the season.

Viking Loose to Orioles
In Non-League Contest Here

A powerful Augusta team, unbeaten over a two-year span, defeated Winfield, 20-0, in a non-league game here last night.

The Orioles showed a strong, hard-charging line and an array of backs who could hit hard and often. Winfield never semed to get into full offensive gear as the Orioles showed power on defense as well as on offense.

Augusta took the initial kickoff and Mike Bogard, the workhorse of the Oriole backifeld, ran the ball back to his own 38. There the visitors started a drive that rolled to four consecutive first downs. The fourth landed the ball on the Viking 1-yard and from that point Kent Adams plunged over for the first touchdown. Adams missed an attempt for the extra point.

Use Long Pass

The Orioles led for the first period, 6-0, and soon uncorked another drive, featured by a 28-yard dash by Charles Dole, Agusta quarterback. However, the Vikings held and took the ball on downs on their own 19-yard.

Winfield could not dain, punted, and the teams exchanged the ball twice on fumbles. Then Augusta started another drive on its own 40. A pass, Dole to Adams, ate up 55 yards and Lee Miller capped the drive by plunging over from the 1-yard. Adams booted the extra point and the Orioles led at the half, 13-0.

At the start of the second half Winfield took the kickoff, could not gain and punted. Augusta started play on its own 47 and ran to two first downs. Bogard plunged through the middle for 5 yards, planting the ball on the Viking 15-yard. On a pitchout Adams took the ball and corcled his own right end for 15 yards and a touchdown. Adams kicked the extra point and the Orioles had a 20-0 advantage.

Flash of Offensive Form

Winfield took the following kickoff and showed its best offensive play of the game in rushing to three consecutive first downs. Mel Brown, Larry Cooley, Jim Davis and Phil Hower helped with the chores but the drive died when the ball was lost on a fumble on the Oriole 30.

Late in the gaem Winfield recovered an Oriole fumble on the Augusta 47 and started a drive, making one first down on plunges by Mel Brown and Davis. However, Winfield drew an offside penalty, two passes failed and Augusta took over on downs on its own 41 after the Vikes lost 14 yards on fourth down in attempting to pass.

Augusta had much the better of the argument in first downs, rushing and in passing. Buddy Akin, Viking halfback suffered an injury in the first hanf and was forced from the game.

A large crowd followed the Orioles from Augusta.

Winfield thus closed out its season with a 5-4 record, the best in years at the Viking school. Prospects seem good for next season, as several starters will be available.
