Ghost on the Building
North East Corner
10th Ave. & Main

This redbrick building has been at this location since the late 1870's (anybody have the exact date?) It has been painted many times. There is an image in the middle of the lower floor, on 10th Avenue that always seems to bleed through. You can just make out the shadow in this picture taken by Jim Davis in 1999. It was late in the afternoon and the sun was just right to show the "ghost".

With some image processing magic on in Photoshop, the image becomes more pronounced. What is it? Who is it? Is there lettering at the top? Imagination must take over where science stops. Click on the images for full size pictures.

Hi Bill!
Just wanted to let you know the "ghost" is of Josh Wallace. I think he had a clothing(?) store in that building. He was one of the early businessmen in town. Helped get the Winfield Business Club (later chamber of Com.) started. Frankie Collison could tell you gobbs more!
All the Best!

This is my memory, but should be verified by research into the Winfield City Directory prior to 1946.

My memory is that Josh Wallace had a store at the northeast corner of Tenth & Main. It was a small mens' clothing store. He was a well known merchant who was no longer in business in 1946 when I went into the insurance business. His store building was across 10th street north of "Ziggity" Dauber's department store. Dauber's was demolished and replaced by what is now the E.B.Stephenson & Co. building.
