Hi yawl - I?m asking Bill to share this with his long email list of persons interested. In a recent
email, Bill seemed to assume that I have, in at least rough text form, a lot of material on the
"Musical History of Winfield." Sorry, but this is not the case. Over a long period, I have been
keeping a list of possible subjects, mostly on paper but some in my head. Thank God the "head
list" is short.

The following is what I have so far. I fully realize many of you can add much more. But
perhaps it's because of my love of music and the inspiration I have received by all the musical
activities here now, and in the past, that they have become so vivid in my mind.

1. Musical families (such as the Wilders).

2. Individual artists (instrumental and vocal and a few who went on to greatness)

3. Chautauqua (When Faith Hanna was in her early teens, her mother, Maude (Emory) Martin,
entertained in their home the famous Carrie Jacobs Bond, singer and writer of such famous
songs as When You Come to the End of a Perfect Day, A Little Pink Rose in My Garden Grew,
etc)

4.The Opera House (It was said that at the time, it had the finest acoustics of any auditorium in
Kanas.)

5. Church music (by this I mean Winfield churches which continue to produce and encourage
members in song, instrumental, dance).

6. Winfield College of Music (Marie Burdette as a student and later teacher there). By the way,
Marie is in Wm Newton Hospital with badly swollen ankles and feet. She?d love to hear from
you. She?s doing well. Room #340).

7.The "Southwestern Connection" in music.

8. "Elijah" and Ross Williams.

9. Public schools music. (there could be a whole chapter on the WHS string orchestra.)

10. Frank and Judy Johnson?s contribution to public schools? music.

11. City Band.

12. Frank Johnson and his "Spirit of New Orleans" combo (they even play regularly at church
services).

Best to all - Howard
